When people search for "types of kratom" they usually mean one of two things: the strain names (Maeng Da, Bali, Borneo) or the product format (powder, capsules, extract). This guide covers format. For strains, see our pages on red vein, green vein and white vein kratom.

We compare formats on things you can check: what is in the package, how it is sold, what the listing states and what the lab report shows. We make no claims about what any format does for you, and this is not medical advice.

All figures come from Panacea Natural listings in our October 2026 catalog snapshot. Stock changes, and at that snapshot the Green Maeng Da powder was out of stock.

Powder

Powder is ground kratom leaf. It is the base ingredient for most other formats and is sold by weight. Green Maeng Da powder is listed at $9.99 for 1 oz (28 g), $34.99 for 250 g, $64.99 for 500 g and $99.99 for 1 kg. That works out to about $0.36 per gram at 1 oz and about $0.14 per gram at 250 g.

Powder gives you the most price flexibility. It also leaves everything to you: the vendor does not state a content figure, and the format involves loose product. See our kratom powder comparison for every size and strain.

Capsules

Capsules are the same leaf powder in a capsule shell. The Green Maeng Da capsules come in a 90-capsule bottle at $24.99, about $0.28 per capsule, with a store rating of 4.1 stars from 902 reviews. The listing states a capsule count, not a per-capsule weight or mitragynine figure, so it cannot be compared with powder by weight or with extract products by content.

The trade-off is pre-portioned packaging against less price transparency per gram. Our kratom capsules guide compares every bottle.

Extracts

Extract products are made by concentrating compounds from the leaf. In this catalog that covers extract tablets, liquid shots, the 10 mL liquid extract and, in a sense, the gummies. Unlike powder and capsules, these list a mitragynine figure per package:

Concentrated products are why some states regulate extracts differently from plain leaf. Read the label, follow the serving information on the package and never treat package size as a serving. Our kratom shots page compares all the liquid and tablet extracts.

Can you compare formats by price?

Only partly. Powder is priced per weight, capsules per count, and extracts per package with a listed milligram figure. Those units do not convert to each other: weight of leaf is not the same as mitragynine content, and leaf varies. The honest comparison is within a format, using the listed figures and the lab report.

What health agencies say

The format does not change the warnings. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) identifies mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine as the best-studied kratom compounds, notes that both act on mu-opioid receptors, and states that the FDA has not approved kratom for any medical use. Talk to a doctor before using any kratom product.

Panacea Natural does not ship to Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Louisiana, Vermont, Wisconsin, Sarasota County (FL), Union County (NC), Denver (CO) or San Diego (CA), and other places have their own rules. Check yours first.

Frequently asked questions

What are the main types of kratom products? Powder, capsules, extract tablets, liquid shots and extracts, and gummies, in addition to the strains sold in each.

Is kratom extract the same as kratom powder? No. Powder is ground leaf. Extracts are concentrated products that usually list a mitragynine figure per package.

Which format is cheapest? By the listed price, powder in larger sizes has the lowest price per gram. Prices of other formats cannot be fairly converted to a per-gram figure.

Do all formats have lab reports? Not necessarily. In our snapshot, the listed powder, capsule, tablet, shot and gummy products link reports, while the 300 Ultra liquid extract does not.

Is one package one serving? Not necessarily. Always follow the serving information on the label.
